FIXED ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS FOR THE TREATMENT OF LIQUIDS.
As well as our standard packages (mobile filters MOBICON® and AIRCON®), Desotec's engineering services can develop and manufacture tailor-made activated carbon filters (FILTRAFIX®-L) and chlorine filtration solutions (FILTRAFIX®-Cl) for liquids.
Activated carbon is a micro-porous inert carbon with a large internal surface (up to 1500m2/gr). On this surface organic molecules from liquids or gases can adsorb. Adsorption is the natural phenomenon in which molecules from the gas or liquid phase are attached to the surface of the solid.
For the application of granular and extruded activated carbon to purify liquids or gases, these types of carbon are normally put into filters, which can be open or closed. In most of the industrial applications closed filters are used. These closed filters can be pressure resistant up to several bar and allow to pump liquids and gases under pressure through the filter. For drinking water application mainly open filters are used and water runs through the bed by gravity.
Filters filled with activated carbon are also called 'adsorbers'.

FEATURES
SERVICE
In addition to supplying activated carbon, DESOTEC ACTIVATED CARBON acts as a consultant / contractor for a full range of applications, equipment, mobile and fixed filters and adsorbers and offers the service regeneration / treatment of the used carbon.
RECYCLING BY THERMAL REACTIVATION
Once the extruded activated carbon is saturated or the treatment objective is reached, it can be recycled, by thermal reactivation, for reuse. Reactivation involves treating the spent carbon in a high temperature furnace to over 800°C. During this treatment process, the adsorbed organics on the carbon are thermally destroyed. Recycling by reactivation is a highly skilled process to ensure that spent activated carbon is re-activated to a reusable quality. The DESOTEC reactivation furnace is an indirect type, based on the latest technology and meeting the highest ecological standards. Recycling activated carbon meets the environmental need to minimise waste, reducing CO2 emissions and limiting the use of the world's resources. The return of the spent activated carbon is subject to acceptance procedures.
PRESSURE DROP
For the treatment of air and gases, extruded activated carbon is normally used. For the calculation and the prediction of this pressure drop, use the pressure drop graph (on request). The pressure drop depends on the size of the pellets and the design of the filter itself.
SAFETY MESSAGE
Wet activated carbon removes oxygen from air causing a severe hazard to workers inside carbon vessels and enclosed or confined spaces. Before entering such an area, sampling and work procedures for low oxygen levels should be taken to ensure ample oxygen availability, observing all local, state, and federal regulations.
Activated carbon is also susceptible to exothermic reactions in contact with oxidizing material and some organic compounds such as ketones (acetone), acrylates, esters, volatile acids, amines etc. under certain conditions. In case of temperature rise, flooding with water is recommended.
