ACTIVATED CARBON
Activated carbon is a well-known powerful adsorbent for the removal of organic compounds in both gas and liquid phase. Depending on the application, the most appropriate activated carbon is selected either on known characteristics of the chemicals to be removed in an adsorption process or by a series of controlled laboratory tests. As well as organic compounds some inorganic compounds can be adsorbed such as heavy metals. Activated carbon will also remove oxidising agents such as chlorine and ozone.
IMPREGNATED ACTIVATED CARBON
To enhance its capacity in air purification applications, activated carbon can be chemically impregnated to stimulate chemisorption. The DESOTEC activated carbon is a high quality product, produced and supplied at high standards and specifications. For the treatment of air and gases normally extruded carbons or big granular types are used. Chemically impregnated carbons are manufactured to meet the technical demands of many processes and applications, some of which are listed below:
| - air purifications | sewage odours, chemical works, air conditioning |
| - gas masks | to meet international standards CEN, NIOSH etc. |
| - desulphurisation | natural gas |
| - mercury removal | hydrogen production |
| - radioactive iodides | nuclear industry |
| - war gases | NBC filters and gas masks |
| - fume control | laboratory fume cabinets |
| - water filtration | bacteriostatic water filters |

(1) This list is not complete and gives only the most common carbons. Other types are available on request.
(2) Chemical impregnation on the standard activated carbon e.g. GAC or EAC 3 or 4 mm.
CHEMISORPTION
As an impregnated activated carbon, the carbon itself acts as a carrier and catalyst for chemical reactions and precipitation. By adding chemicals on the surface of the carbon, these impregnated carbons are used for the removal of (mainly) inorganic compounds from air and gas streams. There is a synergetic action between the activated carbon and the impregnated chemicals on the surface.
The performance of activated carbon depends on many factors:
SERVICE
In addition to supplying activated carbon, DESOTEC ACTIVATED CARBON N.V.-S.A. acts as a consultant / contractor for a full range of applications, equipment, filters and adsorbers, also on a rental basis, and offers the service of exchange units and take-back / treatment of the used carbon.
PACKAGING
The activated carbon is packed as standard in 25kg sacks or 500 kg bigbags on pallets of 500 kg net. Alternative forms of packaging are available on request.
PRESSURE DROP
For the treatment of air and gas, extruded (or pellet) activated carbon is normally used, for his cylindrical form which causes less pressure drop. For the calculation and the prediction of these pressure drop. The pressure drop depends on the diameter of the pellet - see chapter 4 - pressure drop EAC for air.
SAFETY MESSAGE
Wet activated carbon removes oxygen from air causing a severe hazard to workers inside carbon vessels and enclosed or confined spaces. Before entering such an area, sampling and work procedures for low oxygen levels should be taken to ensure ample oxygen availability, observing all local, state, and federal regulations.
